Programmers Arena: CYBER CRIME---Introduction

CYBER CRIME---Introduction

You must be wondering what on earth is a cyber crime...?

You may define cyber crime as - fundamentally any illegal activity committed using a computer and/or the internet.
Although the term is usually reserved for criminal activity wherein a computer or the internet is the location of the crime its also used to include traditional crimes in which computers or the internet are chief tools used in enabling the illegal activity.
You'd be surprised to know that criminals could commit fraud, thievery, identity theft, etc. even without the help of tech. These crimes existed long time back, even before the word "cyber" came into being.
And yes to conclude to the definition you may say that Cyber Crime is an extension to the present criminal activity, perhaps rather easier and simultaneously adding new dimensions to it.
The legal definition to which most of the European and North-American countries agreed to, at the Budapest Convention on Cyber Crime is "an illegal act where a computer or a computer network serves as the location, means, target or source of the act" that came into force on July 1st, 2004.

Okay...so when did it start and why...?

Since the beginning of the Cyber era, programmers have been working to find the loop holes in software and hardware products. When the era was relatively new, the networks were first gaining prominence in the 1990's, those who engaged in illegal hacking activities only did so to to improve their knowledge of the systems that they were using, so that they could pit themselves against other competitors and be heralded as a better hacker.
